E21 323i
The E21 is the first generation 3 Series compact executive saloon, which replaced the popular 02 Series. BMW M did not have a designated M3 for this generation, however, the 323i with its 2.3L six-cylinder engine was considered a top performer at the time. Utilizing a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection, the 323i was capable of an 8.7 second 0-60 time and a top speed of 124 mph in 1977.
