S54B32 Engine
The S54 is a straight-6 engine from BMW M that evolved from the S50 found in the E36 M3. The S54B32 configuration was used in the E46 M3, Z3M, and Z4M. Signature details include a displacement of 3,246 cc, dual VANOS (VAriable NOckenwellen Steuerung), compression ratio of 11.5:1, electronic throttle control through 6 individual throttle bodies, and a Siemens MSS 54 engine control unit (ECU). The E46 CSL exclusively utilized the S54B32HP, with the HP standing for High Performance. Changes to the CSL engine included a revised intake manifold made from carbon fiber, revised camshafts, a MAP sensor (instead of the MAF sensor used in the regular S54), a lightweight exhaust manifold with a straighter air path (which later became standard on the regular S54) and a straightened intake manifold.
