The N54 is a twin-turbocharged straight-six engine and was BMW’s first mass-produced turbocharged engine. Signature details include direct injection, double-VANOS, an open-deck engine block, and an electric water pump. Even after the arrival of its successor, the N55, the N54 was still produced in select models. Most notable was the USDM only 335is which came with a higher performance version of the N54B30. Boost was increased from 8.7 to 11.6 psi resulting in 320hp and 332lbft of torque, plus an overboost function that raised torque to 370lbft for up to 7 seconds. A high-output version was also used in the Motorsport developed 1 series M coupe.
