The S85 is BMW’s first and only production V10 engine, and the first petrol V10 engine ever offered in a production sedan. Infused with F1 technology, the S85 developed a peak power output of 500 bhp with an 8,250 rpm redline. Signature details include dual overhead camshafts with four hydraulically lifted valves per cylinder, double-VANOS (variable valve timing), a cast aluminum block with bed plate design split at the crankshaft axis, oil-cooled cast aluminum pistons, 10 electronically actuated individual throttle bodies, and a Siemens MS S65 engine control unit (ECU). The S85 offered the comfort-oriented P400 Performance Program, providing a maximum output of 400 hp that is automatically activated every time the driver starts the engine. Then, by pressing the Power Button, the driver is able to activate full engine output of 507 hp provided by either a sporting or race-like Dynamic Driving Program. Sending the power to the rear wheels was through the last generation of sequential manual gearboxes ever to be produced by BMW, the 7-speed SMG III. The SMG III was equipped with Drive Logic and was capable of achieving 20% faster shifting time compared to the SMG II, resulting in a shifting time of just 65 milliseconds in its most aggressive mode.
